My Cultural Radar

 Hi classmates,

I recently delved into Sue Perkins’ cultural highlights and found them fascinating. What struck me most was her candid reflection on The Bear. Sue admitted that she initially disliked the show’s chaotic energy, particularly in the first episode, but eventually, it won her over. She was especially captivated by Jamie Lee Curtis’s performance in the “Fishes” episode, which she described as a standout. This resonated with me because it highlights how our perceptions of art can evolve, often leading to a deeper appreciation.

Sue also shared her admiration for Nina Conti’s film Sunlight. She’s intrigued by Conti’s unique approach, blending comedy with darker psychological themes. The film, shot in the visually stunning landscapes of New Mexico, promises to be both an entertaining and thought-provoking experience.

In literature, Sue revisited Angela Carter’s Wise Children, a book she first encountered in university. She praised its rich, Shakespearean references and its impact on her, likening it to a refreshing jolt compared to the other literature she was studying at the time. This recommendation piqued my interest, especially since Wise Children is known for its complex characters and intertwining narratives.

Sue’s travel highlight was Budapest, a city she rediscovered on a recent trip. While her first visit was a chaotic whirlwind, this time, she fell in love with the city’s beautiful architecture and fantastic food, particularly the Turkish dishes. It’s a reminder of how revisiting places can offer entirely new perspectives.

Lastly, Sue talked about her hobby of stained glass mosaicing. She’s currently working on a memorial plaque for her sister’s dog, a project she described as both intricate and therapeutic. This passion for crafting shows her creative side and her dedication to preserving memories in a unique way.

Here’s what’s on my cultural radar:

Series: Sex and the City

I’ve been revisiting Sex and the City, a series that continues to impact my views on relationships and fashion. The blend of humor with real-life issues, from the complexities of love to the dynamics of friendship, makes this show a timeless cultural touchstone. Watching it again reminds me why it resonated so deeply with audiences, its relatable characters and bold approach to topics that were often considered taboo.

Literature: Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

This book has captivated me with its exploration of young love and identity. Heartstopper tells a heartwarming story of two boys navigating their feelings for each other while dealing with the challenges of adolescence. Its inclusive narrative and honest portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships make it a powerful read that resonates on a personal level. I appreciate how it captures the complexities of growing up with such authenticity and sensitivity.

Music: Facebrooklyn’s Album "Hablando de Ti"

Lately, I’ve been listening to Facebrooklyn’s new album Hablando de Ti. The mix of soulful lyrics and modern beats has really struck a chord with me. The songs delve into themes of love, loss, and self-reflection, making the album feel deeply personal. The blend of genres adds a refreshing variety to the tracks, making it a perfect soundtrack for introspective moments.

Art: Bob Ross Videos

Every night, I unwind with Bob Ross’s painting tutorials. His soothing voice and calm demeanor create a relaxing atmosphere that helps me de-stress before bed. Beyond relaxation, I’ve found that I’m learning a bit about art techniques and the joy of painting. There’s something incredibly therapeutic about watching his brushstrokes bring serene landscapes to life.

Cultural Event: September 18th Fondas

I’m eagerly looking forward to the upcoming September 18th Fondas, a celebration of Chilean independence. The festive atmosphere, filled with traditional music, dance, and food, is something I cherish every year. It’s a time to connect with my cultural roots and celebrate with friends and family. The sense of community and national pride during these celebrations makes it one of my favorite times of the year.

That’s what’s on my cultural radar this month! What’s on yours?
